A job that transforms lives

Mindy Bloom vividly remembers the first time she met Ronald McDonald

as a child at a local McDonald’s restaurant. With her sister and friend in tow, Mindy excitedly stood in line for more than an hour to meet Ronald and shake his hand. Little did she know how much Ronald McDonald would symbolize the work she would do throughout her career.

Mindy joined McDonald’s working as a crew person in 1979. She enjoyed meeting and serving customers. The skills she learned while working at the restaurant – team work, punctuality, diversity and loyalty – were ones she valued and would carry with her throughout her career. After she finished college, Mindy continued to have strong ties to McDonald’s while working for one of their advertising agencies and a media company.

In 2005 Mindy felt that it was time to make a career change. She wanted to find a position that would allow her to “do something that counts.” By chance one day a friend casually mentioned that the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem was looking for a development director. It felt like a perfect fit - she had helped raise funds for the House in 1984. Mindy submitted her application that day. With her McDonald’s background, affinity to RMHC and strong desire to make a difference, she was hired.

Over the last eight years, Mindy’s work at RMHC has transformed her life, and in doing her job she has helped transform other families’ lives as well. Aside from raising funds for the House, Mindy makes a point to meet, connect with and support families that stay there. She’s able to help donors understand that by giving to RMHC, they can make a direct impact on a child and family’s lives.

Whether at the House or when she was first behind the counter at McDonald’s, teamwork has been a priority for Mindy. “Just like working on a crew at a restaurant, at the House it’s a team effort. If you’re walking down the hall and you see somebody needs something, you pitch in.” This includes the support of donors, staff, volunteers and the families in the House.
