A Second Chance

A second chance; a second home; a second family – that’s what the Ronald McDonald House means to me.

In June 2005, I was a 17-year-old high school senior who had just been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor.  I began receiving radiation treatment in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, two hours away from my hometown.  One of my doctors referred my family to the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, which soon became my “home away from home” while I received treatment.  In the weeks that followed, I grew close to the House’s staff members who were warm and friendly and made me feel like a part of the House, especially at a time when I most needed support.

One of my favorite memories of being at the House was breakfast time.  Early in the morning, the kitchen would be filled with families checking on one another and getting something to eat before heading over to the hospital.

After my cancer went into remission and I began my college education, I remained connected with the House.  I volunteered when possible and served as a member of the Family Advisory Council.  This was an opportunity to give back to the House that has been so hospitable to me and my family.  And, when the time came for me to find an internship required by a college course, I looked no further than the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem!

This summer, I am one of two Development Interns at the House.  I’ve gained experience and increased my knowledge of non-profit communications while working with a warm and knowledgeable staff. I love being part of a non-profit that sustains the families of children sick enough to be hospitalized. My favorite part of the day is still breakfast, just sitting with families, offering the same kind of support that my family received before they headed off to the hospital for the day.

The Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem offered help when my family needed it and gave me a chance to regain my health. Now, I have a second chance at life and I feel so blessed to give back and be a part of the Ronald McDonald House family.
