Home, Green Home
Sure we have home sweet homes, keeping families together when their child is in the hospital. But did you also know that we have home Green homes?
Ronald McDonald Houses that are adopting energy-efficient practices, reducing, reusing and recycling wastes, conserving water, utilizing green products, preventing pollution, and building green.
In fact, four Ronald McDonald Houses in the U.S. have been certified as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings.
Austin and Central Texas
The 30-bedroom Austin and Central Texas Ronald McDonald House was the first Ronald McDonald House in the world to attain LEED Platinum NC (New Construction) certification, the highest level of green building awarded by the United States Green Building Council. The solar-powered House generates enough energy to power 15 bedrooms and offsets 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. It also provides a supportive living environment for guests with abundant natural lighting, toxin-free materials, native landscaping, and carefully controlled indoor air quality.
Atlanta
Atlanta’s 50-bedroom Ronald McDonald House was the second in the RMHC System built to LEED specifications. Building materials for the House were chosen because they were made from recycled products. And inside the House, highly efficient plumbing fixtures and kitchen appliances use approximately 20 percent less water than standard fare.
San Diego
With high efficiency mechanical systems and lighting design, the 47-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in San Diego, a LEED Silver certified building, uses 17.5 percent less energy than a typical building in California. The House also includes 109kW photovoltaic array to produce solar energy and features a highly reflective roof to reduce heat build-up from the sun’s rays.
Washington DC
The new 22,500 Ronald McDonald House in D.C. is LEED Gold certificated. The House features high efficiency plumbing, low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint, green label carpet, and high efficiency HVAC equipment that uses environmentally safe refrigerants, saving energy and costs by delivering more heating and cooling per unit of energy input into the system.

No matter if the House is in Austin, Atlanta, San Diego or any other location, RMHC is constantly challenging itself to take care of the communities they help serve. “While pursuing our mission in support of children and families, Ronald McDonald House Charities is committed to being careful stewards of the environment,” said Marty Coyne, President and CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities. “In doing so, we work to be a positive force in protecting and preserving the environment, supporting healthy communities, and conserving natural resources.”
