I'm Possible
On Friday, November 20, 2006, we received a blessing.
Carmen Cazarez and her daughters Rebeca and Elda arrived at the Ronald McDonald House of Corpus Christi – the House that I manage - and changed our lives.
A year earlier, in the fall of 2005, in Sinaloa, Mexico, 6-year old Rebeca, had been diagnosed with brain cancer and suffered from a three month long coma as a result of an operation on her tumor. When Rebeca awoke, her family was told that she would never walk, see or speak again. The doctors said that her condition would never improve. The hospital sent Rebeca home and other hospitals in Mexico refused to treat her. Everyone told her parents to just keep her at home to live out her final days.
“We refused to believe that was all they could do for her,” said her mother, Carmen. So the family received a medical visa to come to America and Rebeca was transported to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The move was tough on the family. They didn’t know anyone in the community, they didn’t speak English, and the medical journey they needed to take for Rebeca was still uncertain. But the Cazarez family found comfort at the Ronald McDonald House.
To help more families find comfort at Ronald McDonald Houses around the world, donate today.
I speak Spanish. And was able to provide comforting words to the family, helping them get acclimated to their new surroundings. I showed them around the community, introduced them to other families at the House, and was always there with open ears when Carmen just wanted to talk.
“The House did so much more than put a roof over our heads,” said Rebeca’s father, Norberto. “It was a warm place to stay, home-cooked meals to come home to, a Church nearby where we could pray, and a community of support lifting us up.”
After two years, we witnessed Rebeca’s remarkable recovery. Through faith and determination and with the help of extensive physical therapy, Rebeca began seeing and speaking again. Soon after, Rebeca could do what all the other 8-year olds were doing.
Now, five years later, Rebeca is strong enough to go back home with her family. We’ve watched her grow into an intelligent, independent girl and are sad to see her leave. Rebecca is an icon of strength – we all drew strength from her.
- Rachel Martinez, House Manager

Rebecca's story is very hearth warming and very inspiring especially to those who has the same situation, like us. My daughter was diagnosed to have a brain tumor (ependymoma) this May 2012, she was 1 year and 4 months that time. she haas been operated on the same month, she was comma for more than a month. we brought her home on state of coma too. she woke up on the 3rd week of June. Now, she's already 1 year and 10 months, and undergoing a chemotherapy. She's actually subjected for radiation therapy but doctors wont do that to her because she is still under-age of 3. presently, she can not speak, and can not move her body, but she can move her arms and legs. I am wondering how did rebecca's family got a medical visa? Is there any way that we could get in-touch with sponsors in America too. I hope somebody with a good heart can help us. Thanks a lot RMHC for helping needy people. May God continue bless you! You can reach me at janepanen25@yahoo.com
