Safe and Sound

There is a lot in a child’s name.

Parents spend hour upon hour debating what they will call the little bundle of joy that is about to arrive: perhaps a family name, perhaps something that reminds Mom of her favorite flower, or something that reminds Dad of his favorite athlete. Whatever the inspiration, parents want something that’s just perfect.

Yu’an’s name means ‘blessed to be safe and sound’ in Mandarin. She was given her name after she was born, after her parents found out that she had a rare disease called Citrullinemia, and after her family helped her fight for her health while staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Taiwan.

Just three days after Yu’an was born, she lapsed into a coma. Worried, fearful, her parents found out that their little baby had a rare condition called Citrullinemia, which causes toxins to build up in the bloodstream. Yu’an would need dialysis, plasma treatment, and ultimately surgery. The striking news of this challenge cast a dark shadow over the family.

The Ronald McDonald House in Taiwan though helped ease the family’s burden and stress. Yu’an’s parents put their careers on hold for almost two months and with the help of the Ronald McDonald House, providing them a place to stay right near Yu’an while she received treatment, they were able to devote all their time and energy toward caring for their daughter.

“I was optimistic. And I never lost hope,” says Yu-an’s mother. “The House helped us give that hope and strength to our daughter, keeping us close by and eliminating the stress of not being able to pay for a hotel room.”

After liver surgery, Yu’an started to recover and gradually regain her health. Slowly she made progress over the next months, and with each day her mother’s hope increased.

Today, at one year old, with the cutest, round face and a smile that lights up her pink cheeks, Yu’an is truly blessed to be safe and sound, as well as happy, healthy and strong. And her parents thank the Ronald McDonald House for keeping them safe and sound when their daughter needed them most.
