See Mogie Run

It’s been another tough day for some of the children staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Houston, Texas.

Another round of scans and scares. But it’s this time in the playroom, away from the hospital, playing, laughing, and learning with each other that helps them cope.

They pick up a book – one they’ve read before, but a favorite – Fun with Dick and Jane. They love reading, ‘See Spot Run.’ And as they begin, they notice that another one of their friends has moseyed over to join their group for the story. He’s about 30 pounds, 25 inches tall, brown eyed, brown haired, and as cute as can be. He’s Mogie. And he’s sitting there, patiently, lovingly offering his support, eager to hear what happens next.

Mogie is a three year-old Labradoodle who has made himself a home at the Ronald McDonald House in Houston. He is hypoallergenic, doesn’t shed, and loves to cuddle. He was donated to the House by his breeder when he was just eight weeks old, in honor of her son who loved labradoodles and was fighting cancer himself several years ago.

Mogie isn’t actually a therapy dog, he hasn’t been trained in that way, but he’s an amazing House pet, supporting more than 50 families at the Ronald McDonald House every day. He welcomes new families at the door with his wagging tail, he plays with children the same way their pets might at their house, and he hangs out in common rooms, just waiting to be a comfort and friend to someone who needs a pick me up. 

His presence alone seems to have a calming effect that helps children and families with the healing process. He brings a sense of home and normalcy to their lives, and he’s another part of the signature support networks found within RMHC programs. Children at the House describe in words like this:

 “I like to play with him.”

“He makes me smile.”

“I can talk to him.”

Most of all, you hear children say, ‘Mogie is my friend.’ For children battling illness or injury, for their siblings and parents, for volunteer and staff members, Mogie makes Houston’s Ronald McDonald House cozier, happier, and more hopeful. Every day, families see Mogie run around the House, but unlike Spot it’s not for cupcakes, or to get into trouble, it’s simply to make children smile.
