Sharing the Love 24 Hours a Day

Ronald McDonald Houses are filled with love.

They are places where families get doses of strength, support and other intangibles that sometimes can be even more powerful than medicine. The love and compassion present within a House spreads quickly thanks to staff, volunteers and, most importantly, the courageous children and families staying at the House. In each House, there are multiple catalysts that spark healing helpings of love on a daily basis.

One of those catalysts, is 11-year old Lexi Lopez.  After being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of ten, Lexi spent a month as a patient at Sacred Heart Medical Center and then three months as a guest at the Ronald McDonald House of Spokane while undergoing chemotherapy.

Scared, worried, and 100 miles from their home, Lexi and her family found refuge and hope within the walls of the Ronald McDonald House. What they didn’t expect to find though was the kind of love that can help heal cancer. With the House, Lexi and her family knew they weren't fighting alone; they had the support of a huge new family, the Ronald McDonald House family.

“Alexis and I felt so welcome and safe while staying there,” said Adriana, Lexi’s mother.  “My favorite memory of the House was witnessing the bonds forming between Lexi and the other children battling cancer. My daughter took the love that she was given at the House, and shared it with the other children, especially the younger ones, and in turn helped them find the courage they needed to heal.”

This winter, Lexi had the opportunity to share the love of the House publically. She helped the Ronald McDonald House of Spokane paint the number 24 all over the city as a symbol to other children and families that 24 hours a day, Ronald McDonald Houses are there to provide strength and support in the face of adversity. Lexi continues being an ambassador for the Charity, spreading the hope, strength and love that it represents.

Today, Lexi is cancer-free, and Lexi and her family are forever grateful for the living network of support and love that helped them win their battle against cancer.
