The Magic Room

Eight-year old Natalie Bazinet stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Southern Alberta with her family while she was receiving treatment for brain cancer at Alberta Children’s Hospital.

She recently wrote about her top ten favorite things about her and her family’s experience at the House and included her top ten favorite things about it. Number one on her list was the Magic Room.

“1. The Magic Room—because it’s awesome! Have you seen it?!”

We haven’t seen it. In fact, the inside of it is a secret – a secret that only the children who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Southern Alberta know. But we know one thing. It is magical and makes a lasting impression on any child that enters it – it creates a special experience and memory during a time that may otherwise be very stressful.

When a child arrives at the House or reaches a special milestone in his or her life, they are given a key to The Magic Room to escape the pressure of hospitals, doctors, medicines and treatments. It’s a room only for children and offers an element of empowerment. In their lives, adults hold a lot of the power – they are making a lot of the decisions – they are having a lot of conversations behind closed doors. But in the Magic Room, kids hold the secret to what makes them smile, laugh, and escape into a world that is illness and injury-free.

RMHC and its network of Chapters help children find strength to heal and its programs, like the Magic Room, that make this mission a reality.
